Festival of Colours

Festival of Colours,

Festival of Love.

Let me paint you with colour.

Let me adorn you with Love.

The Holika bonfires of yesterday

still smoke in the temple courtyards.

And their warmth is in my soul.

No one can escape

the madness of joy.

Everyone must partake.

This is a feast of love

we eat until we are stuffed.

Sweet/sour bhang lassi

intoxicates us all with the

Concept of Community.

No one is exempt, or Untouchable

from Brahmin to Rat Catcher

We are, on a magic day, One Colour, because we choose to be many.

Caste is not even a memory

And our only weapons

are water guns and powder.

Even so, our sisters

of another place

know the keening truth.

Though they escaped war,

And found safety in a prison

made for refugees…

that is not their home

They abound in colour.

They abound in joy.

For their rainbow of happiness

tells the same story.

They will not submit to circumstance

They are with us.  They are OF us.

Many colours make One.
